Reflection by Bruce Allen

How did this project  begin for you?

This project began by Jamie, Michelle, and I meeting for sake and discussing the projects and possible concepts. I’m almost certain it began from a deeper place for both of them.

What  was your initial  reaction to the project  proposal?

I thought it was awesome. The concept was really strong and my mind went pretty wild with ideas. It was more of a matter of narrowing down concepts that would translate well visually.

How did your perspective of Asian body image change, or not change, throughout the process?

My perspective of the Asian body didn’t really change personally. However my perspective of how “exotic” looking females, in our society are treated was. They look so different compared to most, so narrow-minded people will usually say something dumb like, “You look exotic.” I’m sure it is annoying after awhile. I was once told that if a person can’t change something in 15 seconds, you probably shouldn’t point it out.

If there was one thing you wanted people to walk away with from this exhibition, what would it be?

I want them to see how fine art photography can represent and engage conversations that are hard to have. Also I am opening the first artist owned art gallery in Washington, D.C. It’s called Bad Candy and it’s located in Brookland. Come by!

The concept was really strong and my mind went pretty wild with ideas.
