Prompt

Part of the concept behind EXOTIC GOODS is based on the general opinion of being told a person is exotic.

A question was posed on Instagram Stories, “If somebody told you, “You’re exotic,” how would you react. Responses varied.

“Every time”

“Like I’ve been objectified in mainstream media.”

“Conflicted.”

“Fetished and offended.”

“Enraged by the ethnocentricity imbedded in that comment #effurconventionalbeautyBS”

“I’m cool!”

“Awesome.”

“They hang out with a lot of white people lol. Cuz over here, there’s a lot of Filipinas.”

“NO.”

“Annoyed and othered.”

”Honestly depends on the context and delivery. I mostly see it as a compliment though.”

RESPONSES FROM NON—ASIANS

“Happy bc I look the opposite of exotic. I always get told I look like someone else they know.”

”Like a mystery to myself.”

“Confused.”

“Uncomfortable…this happens to me from time to time as code for “I can’t figure out your ethnic background. What is it?”

“Personally I feel happy to hear that, as I am a white person but I don’t look that way to some.”

“Freaking awesome.”
